About

Michael Gould was born in Toronto, graduated from York University (Toronto) with a degree in Fine Arts (Film) and is the author of one of the first English language books on the subject of surrealism and film — Surrealism and the Cinema: Open-eyed Screening (1976). He has made films, programmed films, conducted interviews with veteran filmmakers and written occasional pieces on film in both Canada and Aotearoa New Zealand. He was awarded a Canada Council grant for writing on film.

He is also a poet, with poems in publications, both academic and popular, in Canada, the United States, England, Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. In 2021 he was awarded by the New Zealand Society of Authors as an “emerging poet” — at the age of 71. He lives in Wellington.
